Current Research:
1. Software maintenance, why systems die!
As Director
of Management Information Services of the Coleman Company, I :
·
Downsized M.I.S. from a $6.5M budget to a $4.2 budget with a cost
savings of $2.3M in the first year.
Maintained the cost savings by keeping the total information systems
budget under 1% of gross revenue for the Coleman Company.
·
Continuously upgraded the hardware environment from the mainframe to
the mainframe, mid-frames and LAN/WAN.
Environment included:
ES9121mainframe, AS400 and RS6000 mid-frames, and numerous servers and
personal computers on the LAN/WAN. Extended
communication to include the
·
Maintained software technology at then-current upgrade levels for
mainframe system software. Maintained
currency on LAN operating system and system software, acquired mainframe, midframe and micro tools including the study of data
warehousing software for implementation. Provided software programming tools
and languages such as APPC, ViaSoft INSIGHT and
SMARTEST, Mobius’ INFOPAC Report Distribution System,
Sterling Software’s Gentran Plus, Microsoft COBOL, MicroFocus COBOL, Turbo C++, Candle’s CL/Super Session, SAS
for SPC monitoring, Visual Basic.

Investigated outsourcing annually in order to make informed decisions
concerning data processing. Included
investigating application programming by offshore companies.
·
Then on-going work in E.D.I. utilizing RetailLink
with Walmart, QuickResponse
with KMart and Target. At that time more than 65% of Coleman’s
dollar volume of customer’s orders were received via
E.D.I. Participated in Kmart’s VMI
(Vendor Managed Inventory) project.
·
Investigated and selected new telephone switches and software to enable
the integration of telephone and computer technology. Implemented DirectTalk/2 voice response unit
to front-end call center processing.
Also provided voice communications over leased data lines through our
switch, thus minimizing long distance charges.

Then current projects included Data Warehousing project, implementing
Intranet for the
·
Researched switch from Netware network products to Windows network
products.
·
Implemented enterprise wide imaging systems for following systems with
more to come:

Researched Year 2000 issues. Our
own systems were Year2000 compliant due to standards set in 1985. Investigated all purchased systems. In addition, worked throughout our
organization helping departments work with customers, vendors, etc. on Year2000
compliance. All new contracts were being
written with compliance clauses.
As Manager
of Applications Development and Support at the Coleman Company, I have:

Managed the application development staff (up to 25
programmer/analysts) for the Coleman Company.
·
Been responsible for major implementations of developed, contracted and
purchased software for order entry and customer service, distribution,
manufacturing support, financial systems, E.D.I., etc.
Significant Achievements at
Coleman:
1996-98 Responsible for the coordinated
effort of the Advertising department and M.I.S. to implement the Coleman Web
Page(s) and electronic catalog. Implemented new Change Control software to maintain version control
for system and application software.
Responsible for the Data Warehousing project. Responsible for the
completion of a customer service survey conducted by an outside firm to
determine level of satisfaction with M.I.S. services.
1995 Upgraded
the AT&T Contract for considerable annual savings. Contract included the entire Coleman Company
as well as other McAndrews and Forbes entities. Developed Strategic Plan
for M.I.S. Upgraded
DASD with StorageTek Iceberg. Held successful blind Disaster Recovery Test
thus, completing the Disaster Recovery Plan.
Upgraded mainframe to model 721.
1994 Responsible
for Document Control Design in ISO9000 registration. Implemented CICS 3.3, ESA 4.3. Conducted trial of EMC, IBM
and StorageTek DASD with no commitment. Initiated enterprise-wide
Imaging. Piloted
a Multi-media project.
1993 Started
developing Disaster Recovery Plan.
Negotiated hot site contract with ISSC.
Upgraded ES9121 from 320 to 521. Upgraded 3990 with more
cache. Negotiated
new UNIPLAN contract with AT&T saving company approx. $250,000. Moved
1992 Finalized
contracts for new telephone system integrating telephone with computer
technology for Automated Call Centers. Implemented a session manager. Implemented MVS/ESA 4.2, CICS
3.1.1.
1991 Implemented
RetailLink with Walmart, QuickResponse with Kmart utilizing Metaphor’s Data
Interpretation System. Upgraded from MVS/XA to MVS/ESA. Upgraded to SQL implementation of Datacom/DB, Implemented a report distribution system. Continuous upgrade to
Manufacturing Systems. Added 3390’s to DASD farm. Started providing General Ledger and Accounts Payable data
processing service to McAndrews and Forbes. Completed last of EDP
Services Agreements to divested businesses.
1990 Upgraded
3990 with 32 Meg. Of Cache memory, upgraded communications
controller to 3745. Reduced MIS budget for 1991 while bringing in an IBM ES9121/320. Upgraded Manufacturing
Systems. Assumed responsibility
for Voice Telecommunications, signed SDN agreement with AT&T.
1989 Named
Director of MIS after LBO by McAndrews & Forbes
(Ron Perlman).
Brought expenditures down from $6.5M to $3.9+M and reduced staff from 65
to 39 while maintaining same level of service to users and upgrading
hardware. Staff implemented very large
new order entry and distribution system.
Swapped mainframes from IBM3081KX to IBM3081K. Negotiated and implemented Service Agreements
with divested divisions. Implemented 100% chargeback system.
1984-1988 Named
Manager of Application Development and Support.
Supervised from 6 to 25 programmer/analysts. Through the course of the job, was
responsible for every application. Initiated salary survey in 1986 which resulted in correcting a bad
turnover problem. Developed a standards manual for programmer/analysts to follow
during systems development. Responsible for several major application implementations.

Reporting, Accounts Payable, Purchase Order, Online Manufacturing Records,
Rebate and Accrual, Manufacturing Inventory and Forecasting, Vendor Rating
System, Same-as-Except Manufacturing Records, General Ledger, Automatic Order

MVS conversion. Member
