Prerequisites: Math 1330 and 1331 with at least a C grade and basic
		 computer literacy.
Textbook (required): A Practical Business Statistics@ 3rd Edition,
			by Andrew Siegel, IRWIN.
Lecture Notes (required): Hard copy versions of the PowerPoint slides
are available in the BA copy center in the basement. A second packet
contains the homework and formula sheets. If you have the PowerPoint
slides from earlier semesters you need only buy the homework and formulas
packet.
Software Used: Microsoft Excel 5.0 or higher with the Statpad add-on.
Excel is available in the COBA and ATLC computer labs. The add-on is
available to download off of the Web page.
Academic Conduct: The Texas Tech policy for academic conduct
(Student Affairs Handbook, pp. 33-42, 1993-1994), applies to all students
at all times. Any student who violates the academic conduct policy will be
subject to appropriate disciplinary sanctions (Student Affairs Handbook,
p. 37, 1993-1994).
Cheating on any test, quiz, or lab assignment, including copying
someone else=s work, using unauthorized materials, and/or deliberate failure
to follow instructions are grounds for receiving a failing grade on the
assignment, test, and/or course.
Disabled Students: Please advice me of your condition and provide a letter
of verification as soon as possible. I will make necessary accommodations.
Grading Policies: Grades will be assigned on a percent basis as follows:
Homework 20%
Exam 1 20%
Exam 2 20%
Exam 3 20%
Final Exam 20%
Tests: There will be three midterms and a Comprehensive final.
If your final exam score is higher than your lowest midterm score, the
final exam score will replace the lowest midterm score. This substitution
will be done automatically. If you miss an exam, this substitution will be
used instead of a make-up exam. For each test you need to bring an orange
scantron sheet, pencils and a calculator. Put your answer on both your exam
booklet and scantron. At least 50% of the exams will come from the homework
problems or practice sets. I might alter the problems slightly, however.
The other questions will be similar to the homework problems. Exams will be
A curve wil be given only if deemed necessary by the professor. The curve
will be the difference between 70 and the test average, but no more than 5
points.
Homework: There will be 7 multiple choice homework assignments. They are
in the lecture note packet purchased in the BA copy center. At least half
of each midterm exam will come directly from the homework or practice
problem sets. Other questions on the exams will be very similar in nature
and content. You have two lectures from when all the material in the
assignment is covered to hand in the homework. The due dates are given
on the assignment and indicated on the schedule below. Keys to the homework
will be posted the day after they are handed in. Make sure you keep a record
of your answers and check your answers against the key. There are additional
practice problems associated with each assignment. These are not to be
handed in. The key to the practice problems is provided on the last page
of the homework. The homework average will be calculated by adding the
grades of the 7 assignments and then dividing by 5. The maximum score
possible on the homework average is 100.
Importance of Homework: Doing the homework completely is the best way
to assure a good grade in this course. By doing the homework completely
you should
1) Do the problems as completely as possible before the due date.
If you have problems you cannot figure out see me.
2) After the key is posted check your answers and figure out those that
you missed. If you can=t figure out what you did wrong see me.
The homework is designed so that you get some wrong. If you hand in all
7 assignments and average 72 you will receive a 100 for the homework grade.
Late Assignments: Absolutely no late homework assignments will be accepted.
Make-up Exams and Homework: Requests for make-ups will be granted ONLY
when accompanied by a letter from an appropriate university official,
i.e. the Dean of Students. In all other cases, no make-up will be given,
and the procedures outlined in this syllabus will be followed. For exams,
the final exam will replace the lowest exam grade, for homework, the lowest
two will be dropped and for attendance two absences will allowed with no
detrimental affect. There are no exceptions to this rule.
Classroom Behavior: As you know, this is a very large class. In this room,
even the slightest noise can make it difficult for others to hear. Please
be courteous to others and remain quiet during lectures.
Attendance: Attendance will not be monitored. Past experience has
indicated that regular attendance results in around a 10 point increase
on exams over those who try to do the course on their own. If you do not
attend class you will need to spend more time than the lecture takes to
pick up the material and you will still not do as well as those that do
attend the lecture.
Extra Credit: Absolutely NO extra credit will be allowed.
Semester Grades: The class average as indicated by the weights and procedures indicated above will be rounded to the nearest tenth. This average will be used to determine the class grade according to the following scale:
	90%-100%	A	80%-89.9% B	68%-79.9%	C
	60%-67.9%	D	59.9% and below F
There are no special cases. If you want to make a certain grade,
you must earn it. These guidelines will not be changed.
